How to Prepare for Your Lab Appointment
You’re well on your way to understanding your biochemistry as a member of Thrive.
The doctors at Thrive by Ciba Health have selected the best labs for you to understand your health based on the questionnaire you completed when you signed up.
Follow these simple instructions ahead of and during your lab appointment to ensure accurate results.
Before your lab visit
- 72 Hours Before: Stop taking supplements. Many common supplement ingredients can interfere with your results. However, continue taking medications as prescribed by your doctor.
- 48 Hours Before: Avoid seafood because you will be tested for mercury.
- 8 Hours Before: Begin fasting. Eat a light, healthy meal before you start your fast and avoid alcohol. Consuming water is okay (and recommended to help your veins), but do not drink coffee, tea, or any other beverages containing caffeine.
- Morning of Visit: Drink at least 1 liter of water before your lab visit, because good hydration makes blood flow faster. Do not exercise until after your lab visit.
- For the Visit: Bring your ID for your appointment. You do not need to provide your insurance information because your Thrive membership includes all costs.
- Wear Short Sleeves: Under any outerwear so your vein is easier to access.
- Bring a Snack: For after the appointment, such as a piece of fruit or something high in protein. Make sure you continue to hydrate after your bloodwork, too.
Note: Each appointment lasts about 15 minutes, but please give yourself 30-45 minutes to account for check-in and potential wait times.
Feeling nervous for the lab visit? Here are some quick tips to make your appointment a little more comfortable:
- Tell the lab technician if you’re a bit worried. They can help you feel more comfortable. Talk with the technician to help distract you during the blood draw.
- Avoid looking down at your arm. Pick an object or another spot in the room to focus on.
- Listen to music on earbuds or headphones.
- Take some deep breaths before and during the visit. Focus on each breath, and imagine yourself exhaling worry on breaths going out.
- Bring a friend or family member to support and comfort you.
- Keep reminding yourself that you’re engaging in self-care right now. You’re taking care of you!
